OKPO / SHANGHAI / HAIPHONG - The global shipbuilding industry is in its strongest cycle since the 2000s. Container carriers, LNG carriers, bulkers and tankers are on order through 2029, and the dockyards of South Korea, China and Vietnam are running at full capacity. What is less reported: every one of those vessels requires significant quantities of transmission and conveying components - during construction and for decades of operation after.
A single large vessel uses anchor chains measured in hundreds of metres of stud-link chain, deck cranes with hoist chains, engine-room roller chains for auxiliary drives, and stainless chains in the corrosive marine environment. As the fleet ages and the order book grows, the replacement market compounds - particularly for anchoring and mooring chain, where classification-society certification (ABS, DNV, LR) is mandatory.
Where the chain demand concentrates
Construction phase. Dockyards specify anchor chains and mooring chains with classification certificates, hoist chains for gantry cranes, and stainless chains for outfitting.
Operation phase. Vessels in service need documented replacement chains: roller chains for steering and auxiliary systems, SS316L chains for the marine environment, and G80/G100 chains for deck cranes.
Retrofit phase. The ballast-water treatment retrofit wave (IMO regulations) is adding pump and valve line chains to older tonnage.
