GRENOBLE / NINGBO / HOUSTON - The energy transition is the largest capital project in human history, and its hidden supply chain is enormous. For every gigawatt of wind capacity installed, thousands of metres of conveyor chain move components through factories; for every gigafactory built, kilometres of assembly-line chain are specified; for every solar farm, tracking systems and material-handling lines need drives.
The numbers behind the build-out are staggering: global EV sales passed 20 million units last year, wind capacity additions topped 120 GW, and solar installations crossed 500 GW. Each of these industries is an industrial chain customer - often a larger one than traditional manufacturing, because the components are heavier, the plants are bigger, and the duty cycles are round-the-clock.
Three sectors, one component backbone
EV gigafactories. Battery and vehicle plants in Texas, Kentucky, Brandenburg and Anhui run miles of F-series and M-series conveyor chains on body assembly, paint and battery module lines - with the added requirement of fire-retardant options in battery areas.
Wind power. Turbine tower and blade plants (from Vestas, Siemens Gamesa and Goldwind suppliers) specify heavy roller chains for nacelle assembly and blade transport lines, plus stainless chains in offshore environments where salt corrosion is relentless.
Solar and storage. Solar tracker factories and battery-storage integrators need precision C-series chains for high-speed assembly, and heavy-duty chains for module transport lines.
